The dressy separate
A pleated metallic skirt or a tweed mini with a fine knit. The piece that says you thought about it without saying you tried.
When you are hosting
Hosting changes the brief. You will be standing, carrying platters, and reaching into a low oven, so choose something with sleeves or a real shoulder, a hem you are not managing, and a fabric that does not show a splash of red wine as a permanent souvenir.
A navy linen shift, an ivory crepe blazer over a slip skirt, or a soft knit set with good earrings all look gracious and let you actually run the evening. Put the strapless satin away for a night someone else is cooking.
Cocktail party season
December turns dinner club into cocktail party season, and the standard rises quickly. This is where a one-shoulder mini, a satin slip dress under a velvet blazer, or a pleated metallic skirt with an ivory blouse belongs.
Two things elevate everything: a proper small bag instead of your everyday purse, and one strong piece of gold jewelry rather than several small ones.
The unglamorous details that decide the evening
Restaurants and dining rooms are cold. Bring a wrap coat or a blazer you are happy to be seen in, because it will be on the back of your chair all night and in every photograph.
Check the shoes against the floor: a stiletto and an old heart pine floor are a bad pairing, and a courtyard restaurant in Charleston or Savannah means brick. A block heel or a kitten heel slingback is almost always the smarter answer.
